In 1987 Aids became part of the public discourse. It came crashing into the awareness of many people complete with prejudice and ignorance.

In this radio programme from the BBC the extraordinary response of the government and some pressure groups is examined. Thirty years on it seems hardly credible that one of the ideas seriously discussed was the formation of modern leper colonies to quarantine people suffering from the disease.
